Understanding natural light is a “must” for good landscape images.

The job of a landscape photographer is to record a scene. Yet, photographers often fail to capture what it felt like to be actually at a scene.

A good landscape photographer arrives at a scene early, and waits for the scene to unfold. Waiting patiently for changing colours and changing mood, which all go along with the change of the weather.

Vital to all of this is light - natural light and all the elements it brings to a scene.

To be able to use light correctly and creatively we first must understand it. Once we understand it we can use it to our advantage in creating beautifully, dramatic landscape images.

There are three basic qualities of light: intensity, direction and colour.

Intensity: refers to the strength of light. If the sun is high in the sky, light can be harsh and too strong. Cloudy days bring soft and defused light.

If you want to make your subjects look younger than they are, focus on the skin tone: Our number one tip is to use flashes in sunlight. It might seem counter-intuitive, but flashes override the shadows that overhead sunlight might cast on faces, making for pronounced under-eye and chin shadows.

Also, putting anything white or translucent over the flash while indoors (or up close) will soften the light, making for much smoother skin tones through softer lighting. If you’re in a bar, for example, just hold a napkin in front of the flash (in your camera settings, you might also want to turn the flash power up, if that’s an option). You can also use the “brush” function — usually indicated by a brush icon — on most photo programs (such as those mentioned above) to virtually brush over age-revealing wrinkles, dark circles under the eyes, and blemishes.

We reached our five acre wooded lot with enthusiasm to get to our Boeler trailer we were living in. It was kind of exciting to do that while we were building our shed to move into. Talk about roughing it.  It was chilly May in the northwest interior of Canada.  If you drove by you would see a barely cleared lot, and a makeshift clothesline in the trees, across from the smallest Boeler trailer.  My new husband and I had just bought acreage at Cluculz Lake, BC. We didn’t know a whole lot about the area. The price was right.
Settling in for the night after being there a short time, we were awakened by the trailer… bouncing.  Half asleep we couldn’t figure it out, but we were very tired, we fell back to sleep when it stopped short.
We checked under the trailer in the morning to find the stored bags torn apart. It was then we realized it must have being a bear.  We were city folk.
