This is very good information …

Here are some rule of thumb examples to understanding the ISO for your
olympus stylus digital camera and any digital camera.

Rule of thumb examples:

What does ISO mean - indicator to light your camera sensor
What does ISO stand for, you ask? ISO stands for International Standards Organization, which refers to the group that set the standards for film speed. Luckily, this doesn’t have anything to do with what you need to know about ISO. ISO, as it relates to digital photography, is an indicator of how sensitive to light your camera’s sensor is, and most digital cameras allow you to adjust this sensitivity. The majority of low to mid-range digital cameras have an ISO range that goes from somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 or 100 up to around 400 to 800. The lower the ISO number, the more light that is necessary to get proper exposure on a given shot. So why not crank the ISO setting all the way up to the max and be done with it?

Many good tips in this article on Lighting … it helped when shooting roses for my

aciontv digital photo frame

Lighting your subject is, obviously, very important for the successful capture of the ‘perfect’ image. The type and intensity of the light can dramatically change the mood of the photograph. Sometimes the effect is not obvious until the picture is developed. Even with the digital camera, although you can see an image immediately, the size of the view screen makes it difficult to notice some of the differences.

The best way to learn how light affects the final image is to experiment – ah the joy of the digital camera – you don’t have to wait to get the film developed to see the results! Try taking pictures with and without the flash. Try using alternate sources of light. Try using settings other than the camera default settings.1. Taking pictures with/without a flash -Many cameras have an automatic flash setting that I find most people used 99% of the time. This may not always get you the result you want. For example, on a very bright day your flash will not fire as your camera senses enough light. However, you may find that the shadows cast are very strong and detract from the photo. Most digital cameras today have a setting called ‘fill flash’. You can use this setting to ‘fill’ in the shadows created by the strong sunlight. — Don’t always use the flash when the camera wants to use it. At Halloween carving pumpkins, take them out to the front step (in the dark), light the candles and position yourself so that the flame is hidden behind the design but the light comes shining through. If using a flash, all you would see would be an orange pumpkin with stuff carved out.. If you turn off the flash, you can then take a great photo that shows the design as glowing against the dark pumpkin.

More tips - polaroid digital cameras

There are two main problems when trying to shoot a PORTRAIT with the sunset as your background. First, your subject may appear as nothing more than a silhouette because the sunset is behind them. The other main problem is that your subject may appear “washed out” if you use your flash. Here is how to avoid these sunset portrait problems: 1. Turn off your flash 2. Aim your camera at the sky 3. Hold your shutter button half way down to have your camera read the exposure 4. Keep the shutter button held down and recompose your shot - aiming your camera at your subject 5. Turn your flash back on 6. Take the shot By doing it this way, your subject is lit with fill-flash while the sky behind the subject still is properly exposed. - it takes a bit of pratcise. (Most digital cameras today have a setting called ‘fill flash’. You can use this setting to ‘fill’ in the shadows created by the strong sunlight).

new way to use a polarizer filter - canon powershot digital cameras

If you really want to add some punch to your images, then get your
hands on a polarizing filter.  A polarizer is the one filter every

photographer should have handy for landscapes and general outdoor
shooting. By reducing glare and unwanted reflections, polarized
shots have richer, more saturated colors, especially in the sky.

What’s that you say? Your digital camera can’t accommodate filters.
Don’t despair. I’ve been using this trick for years with my
point-and-shoot cameras. If you have a pair of quality sunglasses,
then simply take them off and use them as your polarizing filter.
Place the glasses as close to the camera lens as possible, then
check their position in the LCD viewfinder to make sure you don’t
have the rims in the shot.

For the best effect, position yourself so the sun is over either
your right or left shoulder. The polarizing effect is strongest
when the light source is at a 90-degree angle from the subject.

Flash tips for kodak easyshare or other cameras …

Just some basic tips

Your Flash: Tip 1: To reduce the effect of your flash, place a piece of tissue or medical tape over the flash window to create softer light.

Tip 2: Indoor lighting adds a yellow tinge to your photographs.  Set your camera’s white balance (WB) to indoors for realistic skin tones. (Note: most cameras won’t allow yout change this setting in auto mode.)

Tip 3: Turn on your red eye reduction if you’re using a flash.
