In outdoor photography, cloud cover diffuses the light of the sun much like a photographer’s softbox, producing a soft even light that results in softer contrasts. While high contrast can be quite dramatic, the softer contrast allows for more detail in both the light and the dark areas of your photograph. The softer light is also more flattering for portraits or candid shots of people.

Where to find it:
Typically, on the dial on top of your digital camera. On most Olympus digital cameras, it is the M within the A/S/M mode. On most Nikon and Canon cameras, it is labeled by an M as well.

What it does:
The manual mode is a way for the photographer to control the digital camera’s exposure settings completely. In aperture and shutter priority modes, the digital camera is responsible for half the thinking. But after spending a while in these modes, photographers often realize that the digital camera is a lot less smart than it should be. Tricky exposure situations often throw the digital camera off, resulting in images with blown highlights or lost shadow detail.

Digital Photography - Color Balancing

The human eye can easily adapt to different light conditions so that objects maintain their ‘true’ color.

In fact, each type of light amplifies a certain color in the spectrum. What we consider to be ‘white’ light only occurs during the noon hours of a clear day. Sunlight in the early evening or late afternoon gives everything a reddish tint, and cloudy days bring out the blue end of the spectrum.

Each type of artificial light also has a particular color cast. Incandescent lighting is yellowish and fluorescent lighting can be either blue or green.

All of these different lighting conditions affect the color balance in photographs.

Most digital cameras allow you to adjust the color balance for different types of light. This can be done manually or automatically, although the automatic settings can produce uneven results from one picture to another.

Well, I take a chance.  I just got another rejection of an image I thought was alright.  It may have been, but there are too many of that subject already online at that photostock site.  It is getting harder & harder to to get accepted;  is not like it was a couple of years back with I first started.

Dreamstime really like good composition, they are really adamant about that.

Shutterstock likes an image to as useful as possible;  hardly any cropping.

iStockPhoto  must have extra special equipment for diagnosing ‘noise’, ’cause where others will accept an image, they turn me down for noise.
